FibroScan

FibroScan is a non-invasive imaging test that measures liver stiffness and fat accumulation, providing valuable information about liver health. This procedure is often used to detect fibrosis (scarring) or fatty liver disease without the need for a liver biopsy.

Overview

FibroScan uses ultrasound-based technology to measure liver stiffness and assess the presence of fibrosis or fatty liver disease. A probe is placed on the skin over the liver, and non-invasive pulses are transmitted to measure how the liver responds. This test is quick, painless, and provides immediate results.

Purpose of the Procedure

FibroScan assesses liver stiffness and fat content to detect and monitor liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease, serving as a non-invasive alternative to liver biopsy for patients with chronic liver conditions.

How to Prepare

For FibroScan, some dietary restrictions are required, patients are advised to avoid heavy meals or carbonated drinks three hours before the test. Comfortable, loose clothing is recommended, and patients will need to be able to lay flat on an exam table for 10-15 minutes.

What to expect after

Post FibroScan, patients can immediately return to normal activities without restrictions. The procedure is non-invasive, and no sedation is required, meaning there are no lingering effects.

Complications & Risk

FibroScan is non-invasive and carries minimal risks. There are no significant complications associated with the procedure. In rare cases, patients may experience mild discomfort during the scan, but this typically resolves immediately afterward.

Results and Follow-up

FibroScan results are available depending on the ordering provider and appointment scheduling situation. Immediate results require a clinic visit with a GI provider scheduled in conjunction to the FibroScan appointment. In certain scenarios the measurements of the liver stiffness and fat content are interpreted by the provider, and the patient is informed if there are signs of fibrosis or fatty liver disease. Based on the results, lifestyle changes, medications, or additional tests may be recommended
