What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus. There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal and external.
Internal hemorrhoids are inside the rectum and you can’t see or feel them. Internal hemorrhoids usually don’t hurt and bleeding may be the only sign they are there. Internal hemorrhoids may “prolapse” or enlarge and push through the anal canal. When prolapsed hemorrhoids remain outside the anal canal, they can cause pain, itching, and bleeding.
External hemorrhoids are less common and occur as bulges or lumps around the anus. External hemorrhoids are usually painful, especially when sitting. External hemorrhoids can also cause itching and bleeding. When blood pools in an external hemorrhoid a very painful condition called a thrombosed hemorrhoid develops.
Your doctor will perform an examination to determine if you have internal or external hemorrhoids.
