Keeping your GI Tract in Check Throughout Summer

 – By

Your GI tract may take a back seat to other ‘more fun’ activities on your priority list during summer plans and festivities. GI problems can cause a whole list of issues for you; from uncomfortable heartburn and bloating to constipation and diarrhea. Luckily, for some, there are simple solutions to lessen those less than appealing predicaments your rowdy GI tract can put you in. The Endoscopy Center is here to share some ways to manage digestive problems so your GI condition doesn’t take center stage at your next summer outing!

Whether you’re on the way to enjoy a backyard barbecue, your local state fair, or taking the kids to the park to burn off some energy, take these things into consideration prior to getting to your destination!  For success always remember to know your triggers, don’t overdo it and be sure to plan ahead.

Prevention

  • Exercise regularly
  • Try cutting back on fatty foods, fizzy drinks, or foods with sweeteners. Avoid things like fried Oreos, giant sodas, and ribbon fries (as tempting as they can be) to steer clear from an uncomfortable bout of gas.
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Eat and drink slowly to have more control over your air intake.

Avoiding things that can potentially cause gas can also reduce the risk of awkward bloating!

  • Maintain a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables.
  • Eating spicy, greasy, or acidic foods can trigger a heartburn spell. This means bypassing the jalapeno poppers could be in your best interest!
  • Do not consume too much food.
  • After eating, sit down and take a quick break for your food to settle.

Instead of eating three big meals a day, try to eat several small meals throughout the day.

During the warmer temperatures the season of summer brings, dehydration can be a leading role in the sudden onset of your GI issues. Drink lots of water! Always!

Support

If you are the support person for someone struggling with their GI condition here are some tips to support them while keeping the fun summertime offers.

  • Bring a gut-friendly meal to the next family cookout.
  • Make them feel comfortable even if they are having a GI flare-up.
  • Offer your support without making them feel inferior.
